On a hot summer’s day in 1994 75 holidaymakers are ferried to an uninhabited island off the north Norfolk coast. Only 74 return alive. A young man has been stabbed and left to bleed to death in the island’s surf. The case is never solved. Now a new chief constable believes the case is ripe for re-evaluation using state-of-the-art forensics. It falls to Shaw & Valentine to reinterview and take DNA samples from all the survivors. But one of them cannot attend: Marianne Osborne is found dead in her bed, a wartime cyanide pill lodged in her throat. Shaw & Valentine have to delve into the secrets of an isolated coastal community to find the answers to a complex riddle.
